American Idol-Auditions (Winds of Change)
After nine years on FOX, I always said that Idol would go off the air when Simon Cowell left. It just wouldn't be the same. Now it's season 10. This week I started watching, with an open mind and hope that with all the changes that were announced over the summer wouldn't completely destroy one of my favorite shows. That being said, two shows I have a few thoughts.
The Show Reset
On Wednesday night, the show opened with literally a recap of 2010 from when Lee won and Simon left the show and all the aftermath that followed. It felt like a brand new show. It felt more like a series premiere then a season premiere, especially with the new computer graphics at the beginning that I've wanting to see for years. It showed they didn't forget their past while concentrating on the present. Plus I have to say that the show wouldn't be the same without Ryan hosting the show.
The Judges
First of all, it was awesome to see Randy back. He's the only surviving judge after the show reset over the summer. Seeing him in the "Simon seat" was like he grew up and matured into the big time judge. It was nice. Steven Tyler, it's going to take some getting used to him but damn at times he can be hysterical and also plain out mean .That's the kind of mix you need on this show at times. Jennifer Lopez was the one question mark I had going in, but damn she fits in so well. And damn, she has to be the most beautiful female judge they have ever had on this show and that helps. The key was watching the chemistry of the three of them come together as the shows went on. They get along so well, there's no drama, no fighting, no bullshit. It's nice refreshing change.
The Auditions
I might be in the minority on this thought, but I love the LACK of bad performances. The one MAJOR complaint I had in the past couple of years is the fact that instead of concentrating on the good auditions and the heartfelt storylines going in, it was mostly hype for the next bad performance people are going to be talking about for the rest of the season. (I was a fan of Pants on the Ground like everyone else was, but it did get annoying.) This year it felt like the first couple of seasons, in a given hour (and there were three hours of auditions this week) the ratio good to bad was about 70/30 which is perfect for this show. If they keep that pace for all the auditions for the rest of the month, then it will be perfect. They might lose some ratings because of it at first, but people like most, loyalits, will come to appreciate this.
