2013 NHL Preview (Part 1)

Welcome to part one of my preview if the 2013 NHL season. Today I will be picking games worth seeing on a national scale. It should be a fun season so let's take a look...

1/19-Chicago Blackhawks at Los Angeles Kings

I may have some hatred for the Kings as a Devils fan, but I do love a good banner raising ceremony. The Staples Center has never risen a Cup Banner before so it should be a great show. Plus the matchup is one of the best in the West.

1/20-Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers

The Penguins are finally fully healthy and the Rangers need to get off to a good start. This should set the pace for the Eastern Conference.

1/30-Chicago Blackhawks at Minnesota Wild

It's games like this that are going to make this season interesting. This will be the first national test for Parise and Suter on the Wild. If they can beat the Hawks early it should lead to a strong run.

2/17Washington Capitals at New York Rangers

Honestly after last year's playoffs I really just to watch these two continue to beat the crap out of each other.

2/24Tampa Bay Lightning at Pittsburgh Penguins

By this point of the season this game should be a turning point for two really talented teams. As long as everyone this could an early playoff preview.

3/4-Nashville Predators at Los Angeles Kings

Honestly I think these two teams will be fighting for playoffs spot at this point. I think it should be really interesting.

4/21-27/13-New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers

Do I have to have a detailed reason to look forward to these games? A playoff spot, or even the division should be on the line here. Besides it's a rivalry that fans would be waiting for all season.

The PPV Structure Needs A Change

The other day TNA surprised the wrestling world by cutting their PPV schedule down from twelve major monthly PPVs to four. While I'm going to miss a show like Destination X, I think, like most fans, this is a great move. Starting tomorrow night with Genesis this is the schedule:

1/13/13-Genesis
3/10/13-Lockdown
6/9/13-Slammiversary
10/13/13-Bound For Glory

Simple and to the point. It made me think about the WWE PPV schedule. They currently have twelve events scheduled in 2012. While it's better than fourteen like it was the last couple of years, it still feels like too many to me. So here's my idea for what the schedule should be the PPV schedule.

January-Royal Rumble
February-Elimination Chamber
April-Wrestlemania
June-Extreme Rules
July-Money in the Bank
August-Summerslam
October-Night of Champions
November-Survivor Series
December-TLC

This cuts the events down to nine. Let me explain.

First of all leave Wrestlemania season alone. While I'm not a fan of the Chamber PPV in general, it's very popular. After that give the fans a couple of months off of having to say. I'm sorry but fans are dishing out close to $200 during those three months. Money is tight for just about everyone and it always affects WWE at this time of the year. I mean come on they had to rush Brock Lensar vs John Cena just to get a butyrate pop last year.

So take a breather, skip May and do a full summer of shows. After Summerslam, look at your audience. Sports fans are going to watch football in especially the first few weeks of September. Also parents aren't going to let their kids stay up for a wrestling show on a school night at the beginning of the school year.

So then skip to October. Drop Hell in a Cell, it isn't needed and is very forced especially in the PG era. Put Night of Championships there instead of then close out the year with the normal shows.

I know it will never happen. WWE makes too much money from PPVs and right now it's not a top priority (ie three hour Raws) but it would be good for the fans and help the business in the long run.

Entertainment Report Issue #15.5 (TNA Genesis PPV Preview)

Welcome to a special PPV Preview edition of the Entertainment Report. Today the PPV in discussion is TNA Genesis.

Well this could be a great match. Honestly even though it's elimination style, I just can't see a title change at least yet. Let's go with Bobby Roode pinning Austin Aries then a classic one on one between Roode and Hardy which leads to...

Who asked for this rematch? Honestly I don't care either way. I guess let's go with...

Winners and New World Tag Team Champions: Matt Morgan and Joey Ryan

This could steal the show. My favorite face and hell in the company fighting just because Storm doesn't like Bad Influence. Works for me.

Um alright I'll go with this matchup. At least it's storyline driven and makes sense in that way. Two factors come in on this match, Joseph Park is the only one that the Aces and Eights have been able to actually beat on PPV. The other factor is the fact that Park is now a "trained wrestler". That being said...

Alright winner faces Rob Van Dam for the X Division Championship later in the night. This could be a good matchup. Hopefully it's early in the show to give them enough. I'll go with the obvious here...

Now they have to get the X Title off RVD. He doesn't need it, it's not helping the division and just feels like title is taking up space right now. They need a champion start the new year who will help stand out and boost the division in quality.

I was actually hoping the winner would face Tara later in the show. That would have changed my pick a bit. That being said, I guess it's a total toss up. I think it will come down to Velvet Sky and Mickie James, they will go at it for a few and it will end up...

With NHL hockey right around the corner, welcome to this week's edition of the Entertainment Report.

What a week, or should I say what a weekend!

Before I get into things a little housekeeping. On Saturday, Team USA won the gold at the World Juniors in Ufa, Russia and we had full coverage. In case you missed it, jump over and read the results of every Team USA and Team Canada game during the entire tournament. Also on Sunday morning after the NHL announced the end of the lockout, I posted a special edition to celebrate. So make sure you read those.

As for this week, it's a busy news week and another heavy sports week. Also debuting this week is Joe's Take and Mandy's Ring Around The Polish, representing our sponsor Puzzled and Polished.

Well last week I totally underestimated the "Ray Lewis" factor and suffered my only loss of the week. But watching Joe Flacco still doesn't have me believing in their offense (especially with Ray Ray putting the ball on the ground). This week I am going ride the "Peyton Manning" factor, I don't think the Ravens can stand up offensively and I can't bet against Peyton. Denver Broncos By a touchdown.

Packers/49ers
Jim Harbaugh will have his 49ers defense up and ready to play after the bye week and the Packers offensive line hasn't doesn't much to help Aaron Rodgers as he has been sacked more than anyone this year. So that would leave it up to Colin Kaepernick and Frank Gore to run this offense and try and outscore the Defending MVP and his slew of Receivers... I Just don't see it happening. I will take the Packers.

Seahawks/Falcons
Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch have been on Fire and Take away the First Quarter of the Redskins Game against the "Healthy" RGIII, and the Defense has been dominant. I have a bad feeling for Matty Ice and the Falcons that this will be another one and done embarrassment.

Texans/Patriots
The Texans will go in with 2 things in mind make sure the Defense is fired up behind JJ "SWatt" and that Arian Foster gets going early and often. If these two things happen it could be the Game of the week, but based on the embarrassing Regular Season match-up vs the Pats and the inconsistencies from Matt Schaub, I fully expect the Patriots to continue on. Look for Tom Brady to find his key Receivers (Welker and Hernandez) often while mixing in the Runningback tandem of Stevan Ridley and the ex-Jet Danny Woodhead on passing downs.

1/3/13-Chicago at Milwaukee

What a great way to start 2013! Austin Watson scored the game winner in a wild back and forth matchup with their arch-rivals Wolves with 1:43 left in the game. Kevin Henderson, Mark Van Guilder and Victor Bartley each tallied a goal and an assist.

1/5/13-Oklahoma City at Milwaukee

After taking a 2-0 lead on Victor Bartley and Kevin Henderson, the Barons turned up their engines and dominated the rest of the game. Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle scored in the third to tie the game and send it to overtime. The game went to a shootout and Oklahoma City won thanks to Justin Schultz.

1/6/13-Grand Rapids at Milwaukee

After the Griffins took a 2-0 lead, the Ads came storming back and tied the game before the second period was over on goals by Victor Bartley and Kevin Henderson. This went to shootout. After a long nine round shootout, Joshua Shalla won it for the Admirals.

This upcoming weekend will be a busy one for the Admirals. Friday night they will head to Peoria, then return home to play Rockford on Saturday night and Peoria on Sunday afternoon.

Syracuse came into the US Cellular Arena with one thing on their minds. The opportunity to gain revenge for their 12-11 loss to the Milwaukee Wave the day after Christmas. Recently acquired midfielder Bryan Perez put the Silver Knights up 2-0 midway through the first. Another 2 point goal put the knights up 4-0 until Hewerton put the Wave on the board midway through the second. Syracuse regained their 4-point advantage by making it 6-2 at half. A place unfamiliar to the Wave. Another goal in the 3rd increased the lead to 6 at 8-2. Having won 8 straight, the Wave knew that this game wasn't over and came back with a fantastic rally and a huge 3-point goal from Marcio Leite to defeat the knights 13-10. The team plays in Missouri Thursday before returning home to face the Baltimore Blast at 4pm on Saturday evening.

Ring Around The Polish is my little piece of the Report that brings a little humor and a little style to the squared circle. Let's begin, shall we?

If you put Taylor Swift, a touch of ass-kicking, a handful of skipping and a dash of insanity into a blender you'd have...well, a big ol' blonde country mess but also a pretty good idea of the AJ Lee character.

They both have boyfriends for every season - literally. AJ's played tonsil hockey with a goat, a monster and a former cheerleader just to name a few of her escapades. She even managed to help herself to a bowl of Fruity Pebbles and I have to admit even I was a little jealous of that one.

With each boyfriend, she gained a new wardrobe by cutting their shirts more than Hogan on a bad arthritis day. In commemoration of her new found love, Dolph Ziggler, I'd pair AJ with this blue pendant.

It matches his shirt and maybe the sparkles will distract him from finding out how cray cray she really is.

Stay Puzzled & Polished

• This past week Dolph Ziggler, Antonio Cesaro and 3MB all entered themselves into the Royal Rumble, bringing the total to eight so far.
• Alberto Del Rio beat Big Show to win the World Heavyweight Championship in a last man standing match at the Smackdown taping on Tuesday night. For the record it's no longer a spoiler if it's up on WWE.com.
• It is being reported that El Genarico signed with the WWE. That is a big surprise and completely unexpected. Not quite sure how he's going to work in WWE but hey stranger things happen.
• "The Pope" D'Angelo Dinero announced on Twitter that he is leaving TNA. Can't say that surprises anyone.
• Former WWE wrestler Mike Knox was revealed as a member of Aces & Eights on Impact last week. The fans collectively didn't care.
• John Cena will be in cartoon form on the limit edition boxes of Fruity Pebbles. Can't make stuff like that up.

• Someone explain to me why Jon Gruden is getting such crap for taking his kids to WWE Raw instead of going to the BCS Championship. Not quite why this is such a big deal, especially since the game turned into a blowout.
• Congrats to Alabama for winning the BCS Championship over Norte Dame 42-14. Also would like to thank them for making the game such a blowout so early so it made it easier to watch Raw instead.
• The Razzie nominations came out this week and Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part II leads the noms with 11. That's impressive because there's only 10 categories.
• Disney announced plans to open Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theater in 2014. This is not surprising with the success of Newsies but they better the fate of The Little Mermaid and Tarzan.
• In the duh department, screenwriter Kelly Marcel has stated that the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey should be NC-17. Is there a need to further comment.

Entertainment Report Issue #14.5 (NHL Lockout is Over!)

Yesterday morning after Team USA won the gold medal, I wasn't sure if that was going to be the last non-AHL game I was going to see. While I've adopted the Admirals as my team, without NHL game the winter has had a gaping hole. After the game, the NHL & NHLPA met. In the background of the football games, the meetings kept going. Suddenly around 10pm I read on Twitter the lockout was over. I didn't believe it. I wanted proof from TSN and/or ESPN. I wanted a press conference from Bettman and Fehr. I wanted it to be over so bad that I almost didn't believe. At this point, the Packers game was all but over, so I went to bed.

When I woke up at 5:30am this morning I had a weird ease, a feeling I haven't had since June. So I hopped on Twitter in the midst of that press conference I pretty much begged for last night.

It was over.

It was over!

The lockout was over!!!

The NHL is back!!!!!

Now as we await paperwork to be signed and a schedule to be announced, let's look a few major details of this deal.

#1, first of all it's a ten year deal with an eight year opt out. That would mean this deal would last till between 2021 and 2023.

#2, the salary cap this year is $60 million (the teams can spend $70.2 million) with a cap floor of $44 million. Next year (2013-14) the cap will rise to $64.3 with the same floor.

#3, free agents can sign a max seven year contract with a team, if a player is resigning with it's own team, the max is eight years.

There are obviously more details but those are the majorly important ones. The real important part is that we now have hockey.

As for the Report, I'm obviously going to doing weekly reports on the Eastern Conference Champion New Jersey Devils and there will be full coverage of the playoffs. Other than that, I'm trying to figure that out.

That being said, hockey fans rejoice. The wait is finally over. Let's drop the puck!!!

Gold Medal Game

USA 3-Sweden 1

Lead by Tournament MVP John Gibson Team USA beat the defending champion Team Sweden 3-1! Filip Sandberg scored a power play goal early in the second to give the Swedes a 1-0 lead. But Rocco Grimaldi scored two goals to close out the period to give the Americans a lead they would never lose. Vince Trochek would seal the game and the gold medal up with an empty netter.

Bronze Medal Game

Russia 6-Canada 5 (OT)

For the first time since 1998, Team Canada didn't medal at the World Juniors. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins lead the Canadians with a goal and three assists and Ryan Murphy tallying a goal and two assists, but it wasn't enough. Valeri Nichushkin scored 1:36 into overtime to ensure the home country at least medaled. Nail Yakapov lead the Russians with two goals.

Semifinals

USA 5-Canada 1

This game amount to a NFL team losing to a team in the regular season and then getting their revenge in the playoff game. After losing a heartbreaker in the prelims 2-1 to Team Canada, Team USA came back and dominated 5-1 to advance to the gold medal game! Jake McCabe and John Gaudreau led the way with two goal and an assist each and Jim Vesey scored the other goal and also got a helper. John Gibson though was the star again for his team as he made 33 saves to lead the Americans to victory.

Sweden 3-Russia 2 (SO)

Quarterfinals

USA 7-Czech Republic 0

So much for a slumping Team USA who can't score. Led by a John Gaudreau hat trick and a 31 save shutout performance by John Gibson, Team USA destroyed Team Czech Republic 7-0. Riley Barber scored two goals and Jacob Trouba and Seth Jones tallied four assists each. The domination propelled them to a rematch with Team Canada tomorrow.

Russia 4-Switzerland 3 (SO)

USA 9-Slovakia 3

After a dominating full out effort Team USA routed Team Slovakia 9-3 to advance to the Quarterfinals. John Gaudreau and Vince Trochek lead the way with two goals and an assist each. Alex Galchenyuk and Jake McCabe also added a goal and an assist and Jim Vesey assisted on three. On Wednesday Team USA will face off against Team Czech Republic.

Canada 4-Russia 1

It was hyped all week as the matchup of the tournament and it lived up to it! Jonathan Huberdau scored a goal and an assist and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins assisted on three, as Team Canada beat Team Russia. Malcolm Subban made 21 saves in the win. Team Canada finished first in Group B and received a bye to the semifinals.

Canada 2-USA 1

After watching this game, I'm not sure if the Canadians won or the Americans beat themselves. After Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan Strome gave Team Canada a 2-0 lead it became a defensive game. Malcolm Subban (36 saves) and John Gibson (30 saves) put on amazing effort for their teams throughout. The real story of the game came late in the third. After Jacob Trouba made it a 2-1 game, Team USA got sloppy and started taking stupid penalties. Despite Team Canada not scoring on two 5-3s, and despite an amazing last ditch effort l, Team Canada held on to win. Now 3-0 they are heading into a blockbuster matchup against Russia tomorrow and Team USA will play Slovakia to try to stay alive in the tournament.

Canada 5-Slovakia 3

Team Canada keeps rolling but not till after a bit of a fight. After two goals by Marko Dano, Team Slovakia took a 3-1 lead halfway through the 2nd period. That led to Team Canada scoring five unanswered to a 6-3 win, to go to 2-0 in the tournament. Ryan Strome led the way with two goals and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins got a goal and an assist. Goalie Malcolm Subban made 25 saves in the victory. Next up is Team USA on Sunday.

Sweden 3-Switzerland 2 (SO)
Russia 2-USA 1

In what turned out to be a fantastic game, Team Russia beat Team USA on a third period goal by Vladimir Tkachyov. The Russians took an early lead on an Albert Yarullin goal in the first but the Americans tied it up in the second with a power play goal by Jacob Trouba. It was a fantastic game as Team Russia improved to 2-0 (1 regulation win, 1 overtime win) and Team USA drop to 1-1. The US must now regroup as they will face the Canadians on Sunday.

USA-8-Germany 0

Team Germany must looked at the beginning of their tournament schedule and prayed for mercy. They didn't get any. After a 9-3 beating by Team Canada yesterday, Team USA shutout them out 8-0. Goalies John Gibson (19 saves) and Jon Gillies (7 saves) shared the shoutout. Eight different players scored goals, lead by Riley Barber and Alex Galchenyuk with one goal and two assists each.

Now that's how you start a run in the tournament. Team Canada hit a gold mine in an impressive 9-3 win over Team Germany. Leading Team Canada Mark Schiefele scored two goals and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tallied a goal and four assists. Ryan Strome and Jonathan Huberdeau also tallied a goal and two assists each as well. Leonhard Pfoderi led Team Germany with a goal and an assist. Canadian goalie Malcolm Subban made 25 saves in the win.

Russia 3-Slovakia 2 (OT)

Pre-Competition Games

Finland 5-USA 1

Team Finland came to play in this game. After holding a 1-0 lead on a goal by Robert Leino, they broke the game wide open in the third with four goals. Markus Granlund was credited with the game winner. Aleksander Barkov tallied a goal and two assists and Artturi Lehkonen & Teuvo Teravainen also got a goal and an assist each. Blake Pietil got the only goal for Team USA.

Canada 2-Sweden 1 (SO)

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins won the game for Team Canada in a shootout. This game got deadlocked after a 1st period goal by Team Sweden's Alexander Wennberg and a 2nd period goal by Team Canada's Jonathan Drauin.

Pre-Competition Games

Finland 3-Canada 2

In the first pre-competition matchup on the tournament, Finland pulled off a victory over Canada. Finland took a lead in the first period with a Markus Granlund goal. Team Canada fired by with two goals by Griffin Reinhart and Mark Schiefele in 34 seconds early in the first but couldn't hold the lead as Ville Jarvelanien tied the game up just about half way through the period. Miro Aaltonen gave Team Finland the lead 7:18 into the third and they hung on for the win.

USA 3-Sweden 2 (OT)

If this is what the preliminary games are going to be like, I can't wait for this tournament to get underway. Early in the first Team Sweden and Team USA traded goals, Emil Molin and Connor Murphy respectively. Ryan Hartman gave Team USA a 2-1 lead less than four minutes into the 2nd but with 36 seconds left in the period Rickard Rakell scored to tie the game up. After a goalie duel in the 3rd, the game went to overtime. Shayne Gostisbehere scored 1:36 into the overtime from the point off a faceoff win by Sean Kuraly to win the game for Team 3-2!

Entertainment Report Issue #14 (NFL Wild Card Weekend, Admirals, Wave and more)

After a busy and crazy year, welcome to the first edition of the Entertainment Report of 2013. Happy New Year!

Hey everyone and thank you for reading and all the support. As you can tell this week, I am starting up a new design for the Report. This will make things easier to follow and read.

Also a quick announcement. In our attempt to get more content on a weekly basis, next week our sponsor Puzzled and Polished's Mandy (@Mama_Mandabear) will be adding a new wrestling related piece so look I hope you look forward to that, I know I am. This will tie in with the charity organization and it's big opening this week.

This is a pretty light, kinda sports heavy, issue. Despite the two weeks between issues, it has been low on news. I hope you do like what you read and spread the word so when things pick back up soon, it will grow. Let's make 2013 a big year!

Alright let's get into this issue...

After doing picks outside of the Report all season (a 11-5 Week 17 closed out the season), the playoffs will be covered weekly here. I would like to introduce to the staff Joe (@RADickey043) who will be helping with picking through the Super Bowl.

I'll be honest by now I was hoping to be starting 2013 with some actual news. Unfortunately not much has really changed in the two weeks. The only real news is that Bettman has set a hard date. If there is no deal set by 1/14, it's over. I'm really hoping news breaks before them. There are meetings going on as this Report posts. If there's a deal made between now and next week, there will be a special bonus edition of the Report.

12/21/12-Rockford at Milwaukee

After the game quickly became a 1-1 deadlock in finish half and the first period, on goals by Jani Lajunen (Ads) and Brandon Bollig (Icehogs), it became a goal duel. Jeremy Smith (Ads) made 34 saves and Carter Hutton (Hogs) made 36 saves. Milwaukee's Taylor Beck scored the game winner for the Ads less than halfway into the 3rd, to lead his team to a 2-1 win.

12/27/12-Peoria at Milwaukee

What a great game! Adam Crack ell scored late in the first to give the Rivermen a 1-0 lead and in the second Chris Mueller tied up the game. After a goalie duel between Jeremy Smith (32 saves) and Peoria's Jake Allen (20 saves), Ryan Ellis scored with 3:38 to go to give Milwaukee a thrilling 2-1 victory.

Led by two goals by Austin Watson and Michael Latta's three assists, the Ads beat the Rivermen in back to back nights, 4-1. Ryan Ellis added a goal and Kevin Henderson also tallied a goal and an assist.

12/29/12-Milwaukee at Rockford

Led by their captain Martin St. Pierre's goal and assist, the Icehogs beat the Ads 4-1. Chris Mueller got the lone goal for Milwaukee.

For the next week, the Admirals get to stay home to start up 2013. Tomorrow night the Chicago Wolves came in. Then on Saturday night the Oklahoma City Barons are on deck, followed by a Sunday afternoon game is the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The day after Christmas, the Milwaukee Wave began a long 2-game road trip to the east coast. I say long because of the snow storm that the midwest and east coast both saw last week. First visiting the Syracuse Silver Knights. A team that has tried to adapt to Milwaukee's patient style of play and are becoming more familiar with as each training session and game passes. A tight affair saw the Wave's Marcio Leite find the net with 1:56 remaining to send the wave to Rochester with a 12-11 victory.

The next night in Rochester, another tight match ensued. Wave rookie and team leader in goals and points Luan Oliviera, finished the night off with his first hat-trick of the season while Doug Miller finished with one of his own for Rochester. Rochester needed just one goal to tie but it would not be as the Wave squeak out of Rochester with a 14-12 victory.

The annual new years eve day game has been a tradition in Milwaukee for the past 20 years. Having lost the past two years, the team knew it was not an option. This was a must win game, and they came to to play. The visiting team the Wichita Wings was coming off 3 straight wins at home and were also looking for a win. Tenzin Rampa started the scoring off for Milwaukee followed by a Luan Oliviera finish just before halftime. The Wings tied it up 6-6 until Jonathan Greenfield hit a shot from almost midfield that just beat the keeper Sanaldo. Israel Seesay finished the game off when Wichita pulled Sanaldo in favor of the 6th Attacker. Final score read Wave 12 Wings 6.

Next game is Saturday January 5th vs The Syracuse Silver Knights 6pm kickoff

• John Cena, Randy Orton and Sheamus are the first people to enter this year's Royal Rumble.
• Sin Cara had knee surgery and will be out a undefined amount of time.

• Gangham Style became the first YouTube video to break the 1 billion views plateau late last week. It's truly the song that will never go away.
• The day after the NFL season ended, seven coaches and three general managers were fired. This included Chicago releasing Lovie Smith and Philadelphia relieving Andy Reid of his duties.
