American Idol Historical Successes

There was a question posed on EW's website on who was the most successful and least successful American Idol winner. The question was grazed without much thought and not really answered so I jumped on it and ran with the topic.

This list ranks the eleven Idol winners. It is based on CD sales, awards, gold and platinum sales as well as other music success since winning.

The ranking are based on numbers AFTER the person won Idol. Any albums released pre-Idol do not count.

Some are obvious, some are alot more difficult. So let's get started...

#1
What do you have to say about Carrie that hasn't already been said? She has won 116 awards, including five Grammys, sixteen Billboard Music Awards, and an amazing 34 country awards (CMA, ACM, ACA, CMT combined.) she has had sixteen songs hit gold/platinum, all four of his albums have been certified multi-platinum and ever became a member of the Grand Ole Opry. All this plus being an award show host and even the reason for a trade to bring her future husband from Ottawa to Nashville. That all before the age of 30. There was no doubt she is deserving to be on the top of this list.

#2
The original American Idol. Kelly is one of a kind, beautiful and has the best humble attitude. (Just wanted to say all that.) She has won 70 awards, including two Grammys and twelve Billboard Awards. She has had fourteen single skyrocket to the top, and all her albums except one has gone at least platinum. She's now one of the most well know women in pop music and still has a long career to go.

#3
Jordin has quietly become a name in the pop/R&B world. While her sales haven't been amazing, she has had four mega hits, including the star making duet with Chris Brown, No Air. She is currently the last female to win Idol and has made the most of it.

#4
The minute Scotty opened his mouth, everyone knew he would be a star. After he won Idol he entered a built in mega country world looking for a new young star. Since then he has won three country awards and he became the fastest male Idol winner to have an album certified platinum. With such a hot start, his career is already looking amazing.

#5
While I have never been a fan of Fantasia, you can't ignore her moderate success. While she never has had great sales success, she has fifteen awards to her credit into two Billboard Music Awards and awards for her role in The Color Purple on Broadway. She has had a rough life but does deserve her due.

#6
While David never became the rock star he expected to become, he's still a star. With two major hits, he deserves more credit then he gets and should actually be on the same level as Daughtry.

#7
Never is the history of Idol has someone actually had his coronation song get certified double platinum. You can't go anywhere without hearing Home, especially during the Olympics. His first album comes out in November and people are truly looking forward to it. In a world where a male Idol winner usually disappears, this unexpected success is amazing to see.

#8
After a lackluster R&B run, Ruben found his standing in Gospel. Unfortunately he has no real success to show it off. With only one award to his credit and nothing else, he's one of the biggest disappoint in Idol history.

#9
I really like Kris. His most recent album is really good, unfortunately most people didn't buy it or get into it. He has one has one major hit single and is the only Idol winner to pull his coronation song off the Idol tour set list. It's disappointing he's not more popular.

#10
If you look at the list of Idol winners, you forget Taylor actually won. A fan favorite in his season never truly took off after the moderate success of his first album.

#11
If an Idol winner releases a second album, gets no press and no one buys it, did it really happen? That describes Lee's music career now. He actually did release an album last year and it was virtually unheard from. It's sad what has happened here, but it is fitting for the winner of the season that most fans hated.

The Ryback Factor

With a few hours before WWE Hell in a Cell, the main event is CM Punk vs. Ryback for the WWE Championship. There's been alot of talk and questions about how to end this match.

What if Ryback wins?

What happens to Punk?
What about Rock's title shot at the Rumble?
Will he actually hold the belt till Wrestlemania?

What if Punk wins?

What happens to Ryback?

Here's what I think should happen. (Keeping in mind that, against my better judgement, I picked Punk to win.)

First of all, I think the crowd in Atlanta will be red hot and there will be loud "Feed Me More!" chants.

Onto the match, I don't expect a long match at all. Ryback will win the title with a Shellshock in 5-10 minutes. The crowd will be shocked but excited.

Ryback will then move on to Survivor Series as champion but not actually defending the title. He will lead a team against Heyman's guys in a traditional Survivor Series match. After that, Punk will cash in his rematch in a table match, this way Ryback doesn't have to get pinned to lose the belt. But Ryback will win the match anyway.

That leads us to the Rumble. Here's where The Rock returns for his title shot and Ryback is his opponent. This will give Rock the option to either face Ryback or get his revenge on Punk. If Rock picks Ryback, Ryback has to win. You can't give Rock the "honor" of beating the undefeated monster, just so you can set up Rock/Cena II for the title at Mania.

I think Rock should man up, do the right thing and use his star power to put over Ryback and then actually face Punk at Mania.

That all being said if Punk wins tonight, it's status quo and nothing really changes.

Ryback as WWE Champion? Never saw that coming, but now going into the match, I believe.

Entertainment Report Issue #5 (WWE Hell in a Cell, DWTS, Admirals Hockey, Jason Aldean and more)

Entertainment Report
Issue #5
10/12-24/12

Welcome to this week's entertainment report. With the debate and all things political going on, it's actually been a bit of a slow week. But that being said there is still alot in this issue to get into. So without further ado, let's get started...

Feedback

If you have any questions, comments or just have an opinion in what is in the Report, feel free to tweet me at @Reilly21106 or shoot an email to entertainreport@gmail.com. I will post your thoughts and respond next week and every week there are in this section.

Wrestling Predictions

What a strange time of the year to have six weeks between PPVs. I'm all for long breaks between PPVs, maybe even less PPVs in general, but there's a difference between six weeks of setup for say the Royal Rumble than for Hell in a Cell. This is an odd card, definitely different from the norm. That being said let's get into the card...

Believe it or not I have no idea how this match is going to work. If it was a normal one on one match than it's easy, Ryback would win by DQ but there's no DQs in the cell. I'm tempted to say no contest here but I will play it safe...

Winner and still WWE Champion: CM Punk

I figured this match would make sense in the cell with the story they've been telling. But of now it's not. So it's a one on one match. I want to say Sheamus but story wise I see this instead...

Winner and new World Heavyweight Champion: The Big Show

Then Sheamus will hit the Brogue Kick out of aggravation and then Dolph Ziggler will cash in Money in the Bank.

Winner and new World Heavyweight Champion: Dolph Ziggler

Predictable yes. But it would be awesome!

This match was simple written all over it. People should take notes. Miz gets under Kofi's skin, brings out the best in Kofi, Kofi beats Miz for the title, Miz challenges Kofi to a rematch. Simple yet extremely effective. My pick is even more simple...

Winner and still Intercontinental Champion: Kofi Kingston

There's not much to say about this match except if you haven't seen Del Rio making fun of Orton, check it out on WWE's YouTube page. It's by far the funniest thing Del Rio ever did. Nothing else about this feud means anything to me but the match should be good...

Winner: Randy Orton

Did we really need a tournament to get to the obvious matchup? Sure it was fun and killed TV time with good matches, but this has been the real rivalry going on in the tag division right now. That being said, this is a good matchup. Honestly unless they really throw a wrench in and decide to have Bryan/Kane at Survivor Series the match should go...

Winners and still the tag team champions: Team Hell No

WWE Diva's Championship
Eve (c) vs. Layla vs. Kaitlyn

The only real storyline in a long time leads us here. Honestly I'm not expecting much here, it's too soon for a title change, even though Kaitlyn deserves it.

Winner and still Divas Champion: Eve

That's the show, it looks alright on paper. Just like a said a strange PPV at this time of the year.

TV Reports

Taken from EW.com
This was a unique week for the show. Due to the debate, ABC decided to do two one hour shows on Monday and Tuesday night. In doing that there was no elimination this week. So instead of talking about the guilty pleasure individual performances, I want to discuss the much talked about group performances.

Call Me Maybe (Judge's Score:29.5)
For me this was one of the best group performances ever. It was well put together, smooth and just enjoyable to watch. I don't quite understand how this didn't get a 30.

Gangnam Style (Judge's Score:27)
Two words to explain that. Hysterical clusterfuck. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Was it a great dance number? Not even close. This didn't deserve a 30 but it will remain on everyone's minds for years to come.

Episode: My Big Fat Geek Wedding

Before I get into the meat of the show, thank you Mike, Ming and Walt for teaching us that cigar smoke will indeed destroy your comic book collection.

Now as for this show itself, it can be summarized simply. There was an auction, Walt & Bryan made a bet with Mike & Ming that whichever duo got more valuable stuff won and the loser had to reenact the wedding of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Girl from Fantastic Four Annual #3. Well Walt & Bry won.

This led to a hilarious wedding scene, with Ming in drag, completed with vows, written by Bry, and even drove off in a Just Married car down the streets of Red Bank. Honestly I didn't expect that to be as entertaining and funny as it was.

Sports News

Hours after the last issue posted, the NHL announced the cancellation of games through November 1st. While this is bad news, I'm not going to hit the panic button yet. The reason is the fact that Bettman said that if an agreement is made that the season would start November 2nd. So until we get to that point, I'm going to stay calm.

10/19: Charlotte at Milwaukee
Opening night at the BMO Bradley Center didn't go as planned or expected for the 5,572 fans in attendance. The Checkers took a 4-1 lead at the beginning of the third, and despite a valiant comeback effort by the Ads, won 4-3. The Checkers' Zack Bozchuk was chosen as first star after scoring the game winner.
10/20: Milwaukee at San Antonio
Despite out shooting the Rampage 25-19, the Ads lost the game 1-0. Dov Grument-Morris recorded the shutout.

10/21/12:Milwaukee at Houston
Figured this would have been the worst game of the weekend, boy was I wrong. The Ads snapped their losing streak with on extremely exciting overtime win. Going into the 3rd, the Ads and Aeros were tied at 2, that quickly changed halfway through the period. Jonas Brodin broke the tie for Houston at 10:28. 57 seconds later, Chris Mueller tied it up and then Kevin Henderson broke the tie for the Ads 54 seconds later. But it wasn't over yet because Houston's Nick Palmieri tied the game again with 58 seconds left on the clock. Just before the end of regulation, the Aero's Chad Raw took a delay of game penalty for covering the puck with his hand that gave the Ads a power play going into the overtime. They quickly took full advantage as Mattias Ekholm scored just 51 seconds in to give the Ads the much needed wild win.

10/24/12:Milwaukee at Texas
Another rough night for the Ads against the Stars. Jamie Oleksiak scored halfway through the third to give Texas a 2-0 lead and they held on to win, despite a late Mark Van Guilder goal, 3-1.

After a busy week, the Ads have two games on tap for the next week. They are heading back to Houston on Saturday and then return home on Halloween night to play Charlotte.

CD Review

This album is following all the mainstream attention he gained with Dirt Road Anthem and his duet with Kelly Clarkson, Don't You Wanna Stay. The one thing I appreciate is that he seemed like he took a page out of Brad Paisley's book when it comes to rhythm and storytelling, and that's high praise. My only issue is that it's almost too slow at times. I was expecting more fast paced songs. That being said, there are a number of songs that will be on the radio and if done right, The Only Way I Know, could be a massive hit.

Favorite Song: The Only Way I Know (with Eric Church & Luke Bryan)
Grade: B

Quick Hits

  • On Friday the news broke that Justin Timberlake & Jessica Beal got married. That news upset alot if men and women throughout the world, straight and gay.
  • Congrats to Adele on the birth of her baby boy.
  • American Idol winner Phillip Phillip's hit single Home was certified double platinum on Wednesday. It is the first Idol coronation song to do so. I figured after being used for the Olympics the song would take off but this is bigger than anyone expected.
  • So not only does Mark Sanchez's football team suck, Eva Longoria and him broke up this week. There was no other reason to report that other than I just wanted to abuse the Jets.

Podcast Plug

I listen to alot of wrestling shows during the week and they are all similar when it comes to topics. But this show stands out for three reasons. #1, Travis and Dre are really funny and don't pull any punches no matter what the topic of conversation is and who they are talking to or about. #2, it's not PG show at all. This is very explicit and no one hides that. You get what you get and there's no other way to put it. #3, it averages from 2 1/2-3 hours every week. The cool thing is that if it doesn't feel like it, it flows fast and it's very easy to get through.

Well that's it. A few quick notes before I wrap up. First of all, check out my Week 8 NFL Picks, I had a phenomenal week last week. #2, I am now an admin on the Facebook group The NHL Ultimate, so if you are a hockey fan on any level, jump on over and like the page. Finally, I run a WWE PPV Predications group on FB, so if you want to make picks with some cool people, come on over and join the group.

Next week I will be covering WWE Hell in a Cell, DWTS and there will be picks for the CMA Awards. All that plus more, till then thank you for reading.

Entertainment Report-Issue #4 (Bound for Glory, DWTS, ROH, NHL Lockout News, CM Punk Best in the World and more)

Entertainment Report
Issue #4
10/11-17/12

Welcome to another jammed back edition of the Entertainment Report. This is why I love doing this thing, there's always alot of to cover and talk about in a given week. So without further ado, let's get started...

Wrestling PPV Rundowns

Before I get into the show one quick note, TNA added the X-Division Title match hours after press time last week. As for the show itself, there were alot of title changes, a hot crowd and a few surprises.

Rob Van Dam defeated Zema Ion to win the TNA X Division Championship
Samoa Joe defeated Magnus to retain the TNA Television Championship
James Storm defeated Bobby Roode
Joey Ryan defeated Al Snow to receive a TNA contract thanks a returning Matt Morgan hitting the Carbon Footprint on Snow
Chavo Guerrero and Hernandez defeated Kurt Angle and AJ Styles and Daniels and Kazarian to win the TNA World Tag Team Championships
Tara defeated Miss Tessmacher to win the TNA Knockouts Championship, Jesse from Big Brother was revealed as Tara's "Hollywood Boyfriend"
Aces & Eights defeated Sting and Bully Ray to gain full access to TNA, Devon revealed as a member of Aces & Eights
Jeff Hardy defeated Austin Aries to win the TNA World Heavyweight Championship

Thoughts

Let me get this straight. After a month of hype by Tara playing up her "Hollywood Boyfriend". So she plays it up like it's someone kind important. I wasn't expecting an A or B level celebrity, but there had to be a D level celebrity that TNA would use to help pop the ratings. So Tara wins the Knockouts Championship and she reveals her boyfriend and it's...Jesse from Big Brother. What the fuck?!?! Seriously TNA?!?! Now as a fan I hope to watch that useless piece of shit wannabe model/wrestler every fuckin week?!?! This is thebest you could do? Just aggravating.

Moving on to actual important storyline developments. Devon was revealed as a member of Aces & Eights. That is actually a stranger choice than Garrett Bischoff. Hopefully this makes some kind of sense, or else this has been a complete waste of time.

One question I'm actually curious about is why Matt Morgan helped Joey Ryan beat Al Snow out of no where?

As for the title changes the only two I understand are Jeff Hardy and Tara. Having RVD win the X title doesn't need it, hopefully this will work for the X Division as a whole. Also why did Hernandez and Chavo win the tag belts? They weren't on the radar to actually win.

At least Samoa Joe and James Storm won, which is a good thing.

Caprice Coleman and Cedrick Alexander defeated The Bravado Brothers
Mike Bennett defeated Mike Mondo
World's Greatest Tag Team defeated Rhett Titus and B.J. Whitmer
Jay Lethal defeated Davey Richards
Tadarius Thomas defeated Rhino (Rhino replaced Roderick Strong after he quit he House of Truth)
Adam Cole defeated Eddie Edwards to retain the ROH Television Championship
S.C.U.M. defeated The Brisicoes to retain the ROH World Tag Team Championships
Kevin Steen defeated Micheal Elgin to retain the ROH World Heavyweight Championship

Thoughts

It looks like Jay Lethal and Micheal Elgin came out of this show like made men. I'm still stunned that Lethal defeated Richards the way he did. As for Elgin, it looks like he's going into a rivalry with Roderick Strong who left the House of Truth. That should be a great matchup.

After Steen won his match and Nigel McGuinness handed him a box and it had El Generico's mask in it. I'll be honest I didn't see that coming.

Now ROH can relax a bit since their next big IPPV isn't till Final Battle in New York in December. If this show, and even this weeks TV show, is a sign of things to come, I'm kinda excited about ROH again.

Sports News
On Tuesday, as a fan, I was glued to Twitter trying to get information on the deal that the NHL offered the NHLPA to end the lockout.

Here's the basic details so far to make it easy...

  • November 2nd start date. 82 games with additional games in April to make up the difference.
  • 50/50 split between the players and owners.
  • For the season to start on 11/2, the lockout has to end by 10/25, so training camp can start on 10/26.
That's the update as of now. If news breaks between now and next Thursday, I will post up a special edition of the Report.

The American Hockey League started its' season last week. The Admirals opened up their 35th season on Friday night in Grand Rapids. After going down 2-0, Chris Mueller put the Ads on the board in the last minute of the second period. In the 3rd, a new start was born as rookie Patrick Cehlin scored twice to lead the Ads to a 3-2 win.

Next Week: Friday night is the home opener vs. Charlotte and I will attending with Scotty so I will have pictures int he report next week. After that game the Ads will be going on a four game round trip through Texas to play San Antonio, Houston and Texas.

On Monday night, Mike Modano, Eddie Olczyk and Lou Lameriello were officially inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame. This is a huge honor that put in the background because of the lockout. So congratulations to them.

TV News
In the past I've said that I love when this show breaks from the norm. This week was so out of the norm it was awesome. I men the show included the Charleston, the Mambo, the Jitterbug and even a Bollywood act. It was very free-form and even guest judge Paula Abdul seemed to fit in well.

Best Performances: Gilles/Peta, Shawn/Derek, Kelly/Val
Worst Performances: Kristie/Maks, Bristol/Mark

Bottom 2: Kristie/Maks, Bristol/Mark
Eliminated: Bristol/Mark

Thank you America! Finally got this one right! Bristol should have been gone on week two.

Next week should be fun, guilty pleasures dance and the group numbers, they are going Gangham Style! Sorry I'm looking forward to that.

Episode: Stash Bashes

Before I get into the show, I really liked the show being a half hour instead of a hour. It was just enough show without getting boring.

As for the show, in what world is having a four year old's birthday party in a comic book shop a good idea? Only Ming would think that one up. This was a hilarious clusterfuck, with Walt's facial expressions making it for me. Bryan as "Four Color the Comic Book Clown" actually had me roaring in laughter, especially "attempting to make balloon animals".

As for the items that were sold and bought, there weren't nearly as obscure as last season but that's not a bad thing. I really loved the massive Darth Vader helmet.

Good start for the new season.

The all star format seems to be working for DWTS, so of course Donald Trump would want in on the fun. This week the cast for the show was announced:
  • Trace Adkins
  • Stephen Baldwin
  • Gary Busey
  • Penn Jiliette
  • Lil Jon
  • Dennis Rodman
  • Dee Snider
  • Marilu Henner
  • LaToya Jackson
  • Claudia Jordan
  • Omarosa
  • Lisa Rinna
  • Brande Roderick
  • Bret Michaels
Now that's an awesome cast. Also announced is that Mr. Trump will have additional advisers in the boardroom, along side Ivonka, Don Jr. and Eric...
  • Joan Rivers
  • Piers Morgan
  • Arsenio Hall
  • John Rich
This is not even a joke. This could be the most entertaining season of this show ever.

In honor of Gary Busey returning, I dipped into the archives of this blog and decided to reprint the top ten Gary Busey from the 2010 season. Hopefully we get some fun ones this time around.

#10 "A righteous truth, A-R-T is the defination of art. Because you need heart for the art and the art brings the heart."

#9 "What we did better is what we did on the day of the task."-Gary
"What do you mean?"-Donald
"It means we did better on that day,"-Gary.

#8 "Like freedom, Facing Real Exciting Energy Developing Out Miracles."

#7 "I know nothing's free but my heart to your heart is free."

#6 "I think they should be used to be looked at to be usable."

#5 "Pizza makes you put on your clothes like you're a fish"

#4 "The team I have, everyone is like a different color of the rainbow."

#3 "Where the pepperoni lands that where the miracle will happen!"

#2 "There were no mistakes made. If there was a mistake made, it was to understand that a mistake is a gift so you just brush it away and achieve it in another way."

#1 "It's like having the best ingredients in the world to make the best cake you can make. It's gonna come out tomorrow, it's gonna be warm and fluffy and put a drop, put a scoop of chocolate or vanilla ice cream on that cake, it'll melt, and oh yi-yi-yi, it'll be fun to eat!"

Sting inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame

As much as I still don't get why TNA has a Hall of Fame, it's cool to see Sting get honored. It has made me wonder if this is going to be yearly and if it's only going to be one person at a time. Just seems weird to have the whole big ceremony for just one person.

Gail Kim named the #1 woman wrestler of the year in the PWI Female 50

While the list isn't as big of a deal as the PWI 500, this is a big deal for her. This is the surprisingly the first time she got the honor. Congrats to her.

DVD Review
It has been a long time since I was really excited about getting a DVD. I'm not one of the people who rush out to get a DVD the week it comes out, this DVD is the exception. It took three stores to find it but when I got home to watch this set I was looking foward to it. It was not disappointed.

First thing I noticed was when it started it felt like a ESPN 30 for 30 documentary. Honesty was the keywod in this presentation. Punk was very open about his family issues and starting a backyard wrestling organization, Lunatic Wrestling Federation, with his brother and friends.

This led to being trained by Ace Steel and moving onto the Independent Wrestling Association. It was really cool to see the old footage that Punk gave them. It also showed us how he discovered his straight edge character inspired by his then girlfriend. It's also awesome to hear from Colt Cabana and Chris Hero through this.

Moving onto ROH, yeah WWE actually should Ring of Honor footage, including step-by-step through the now famous Summer of Punk storyline starting with pinning Austin Aries to the epic emotional final match against Colt.

This leads us to the WWE portion of the DVD. I'm not going to do the blow by blow commentary. But I will say I liked how they actually showed both points of view on every topic. They had Michael Hayes & Triple H talking on behalf of WWE management and Punk and Paul Heyman taking Punk's side. t was actually very informative while not entirely destroying the business.

Extras
On the first disc there is an extra hour of clips that were cut from the documentary. Included is talking about December to Dismember, what his name means and really interesting stories.

The other two discs are 11 full matches, including pre-match videos and the "commercial free" version of TV matches. Included are the amazing Cena/Punk MITB match, Punk/John Morrison on ECW and the rivalries with Jeff Hardy and Rey Mysterio.

Final Thoughts
This is one of my favorite WWE produced documentary DVDs ever. It was well put together and told a great story even a non-wrestling fan would enjoy.

Grade: A

Quick Hits

  • I guess it was a good idea that I decided not to get into Made in Jersey. CBS made it the first show to be cancelled of the fall season after two episodes
  • Why does it shock anyone that a re-run of a web show, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, is getting bad ratings on the CW? Even the most uber NPH either didn't feel like watching it again or just didn't know it was on. I mean it's on the CW after all.
  • I have to admit I found the Justin Bieber "secret footage" publicity stunt hysterical. I can't believe how many people fell for it.
  • Thank you NFL for announcing that Beyonce will be performing the Super Bowl halftime show. It gives me a built in bathroom break like I had for the Black Eyed Peas and Prince.
  • Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are going to host the Golden Globes this year and I might actually consider watching the show this year for the first time.
Podcast Plug
With Comic Book Men returning this week that meant the return of the companion podcast, The Secret Stash. For SMod fans it's actually combines SModcast, Tell 'Em Steve Dave and I Sell Comics. The hosts are Kevin Smith, Walt Flanigan, Bryan Johnson, Ming Chen and Mike Zapcic. This week's return episode was recorded at the Gramercy Theater in New York, and included talk about childhood toys and television shows. It's a really funny and worthwhile listen this week.

That's it for Issue #4. If you have any thoughts or comments on anything covered here or in the past issues, drop me an email at entertainreport@gmail.com and follow me on Twitter @Reilly21106.

Next week I will be covering WWE's Hell in a Cell PPV, DWTS going Gangham style and hopefully happy news from the NHL.

Till then, thank you for reading.
